What is Peet’s Coffee?
In 1966, Peet’s Coffee, founded by Alfred Peet in Berkeley, California, became a San Francisco Bay Area-based specialty coffee roaster and wholesaler owned by JAB Holding Company via JDE Peet’s. Peet’s Coffee introduced the United States to its darker roasted Arabica coffee in blends including French Roast and grades suitable for espresso drinks. Peet’s offers freshly roasted beans, espresso beverages, brewed coffee, and bottled iced espresso. Peet’s started the first LEED Gold Certified roastery in the United States in 2007. Peet’s Coffee products are sold in over 14,000 grocery stores across the United States. As of November 2021, the Peet company had 200 stores in the United States. They specialize in creating the highest grade of Coffee in your everyday pods so that they become an affordable alternative for your daily caffeine consumption and provide you with a high-quality taste.

Peet’s Coffee Story
Peet started the first “Peet’s Coffee, Tea & Spices” in Berkeley, California, on Vine Street near the University of California, the Berkeley campus, in 1966. It’s not cups of Coffee but originally sold coffee beans. He roasted his coffee beans in small batches by hand. The company grew to four locations and became known as “Peet’s Coffee and Tea.” Peet wanted to bring better and fresh Coffee to the American market and became known as “the godfather of gourmet coffee in the U.S.” The original location at Vine and Walnut remains open. The second location of Peet’s Coffee was in Menlo Park, CA. Peet sold his business to Sal Bonavita in 1979 but remained working with the company as a coffee buyer and consultant until 1983. In 1984, Jerry Baldwin, a Starbucks founder, bought Peet’s four locations from Sal Bonavita. In 1987, Baldwin and his Starbucks co-investors sold Starbucks to focus on Peet’s. Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ new owner, moved into a four-year non-compete agreement in the Bay Area.

Peet’s Espresso Capsules are well-suited with the KitchenAid, Essenza Plus, Essenza Mini, Pixie, CitiZ, Lattissima, and Creatista Nespresso Original machines. Their capsules are not compatible with Nespresso Vertuo machines.

Pros and Cons of Peet’s Coffee
Peet’s Coffees have the following pros and cons:
PROS
- The taste is balanced, deep, and delicious that’s both aromatic and elegant.
- Rich tasting even when brewed from K-cups.
- A very gratifying bold flavor and smoothness.
- Also available in decaf, which also has a nice bold flavor.
- The addition of the Ethiopian Super Natural gives a quite satisfying flavor profile.
- Being a medium roast allows you to appreciate the berry notes in a coffee that’s not too light or acidic.
CONS
- It’s a dark roast, so some might find it too sturdy to flavor.
- K cup pods are costly and only come in packs of 10. Look into grounded or whole bean coffee to save some money.
- The taste doesn’t justify the price. The flavor is nice but can get the same results with a store-brand bean.
- It can turn off some who are used to Peets from traditional dark roasts.
- It can be arduous to find in store. Order online to avoid disappointment.

Peet’s Vs. Starbucks: Which is Better?
There is a great debate: Peet’s Coffee or Starbucks. Which one is better?
The case for Peet’s: Generally, Peet’s has more robust coffee, which may not be for light-roast lovers. Moreover, They keep their freshly roasted beans in open bins, which gives their stores a pleasant fresh aroma and a more soothing atmosphere. Some customers say that their baristas are better trained (although that can be subjective) and well-educated.
The case for Starbucks: Rapping up: Convenience. Just like Mcdonald’s doesn’t certainly make the best burger, where they do win is in mass speed, production, and several locations. Peet’s Coffee also has the added advantages of having an app and drive-thru.
Starbucks is tremendously popular and known for high-quality (at least expensive) coffee, making it easy to compare with other coffees.
However, regular coffee drinkers prefer Peet’s over Starbucks coffee. With just 200 retail locations across the US, the main downfall is finding a place. Confidently Peets will be able to expand their locations in the US soon.
Peet’s Coffee Products
Peet’s Coffee has introduced the Nespresso Original Line, well-suited capsules. The line, called Peet’s Espresso pods, has four offerings – Crema Scura, Ricchezza, Ristretto, and Nerissimo – highlights the brand’s signature dark and rich espresso flavors in a new format that meets single-serve consumer demand.

All the third-party brands’ capsules are only compatible with Nespresso Original machines; only Starbucks has Nespresso Vertuo compatible pods.
