Nespresso Original Line Machine Guide

What’s a Nespresso Machine?

For those who don’t know, Nespresso is a single-serving espresso machine, like the Keurig, which produces coffee like espresso, double espresso, ristretto, lungo, Vertuo coffee, an Americano from a single serving pod. These machines work by piercing both ends of the coffee pod, heating the water, and passing the hot water inside the pod by pressure. The coffee goes straight to your cup, ready to sip. When we compared Nespresso machines with other pod machines, we found Nespresso machines to be superior to all other coffee pod machines. You have to choose your favorite of their coffee offerings, pop the pod in your Nespresso coffee maker, and you’ll have a drink in seconds.

How to Use a Nespresso Machine?

Nespresso coffee makers vs. traditional espresso machines are very easy to use. Coffee making is very simple; you have to let the machine warm up, insert the capsule, and choose the desired drink. You can also calibrate your machine to make espresso shots at a specific size and strength; to do this, hold down the beverage button for at least three seconds, and after the shot starts pouring, release the button when you reach the desired amount. Your machine will remember it for the next brew.

OriginalLine Vs VertuoLine

Nespresso is a popular brand of espresso machine that many people enjoy using. But before you buy one for yourself, make sure to compare the newer Nespresso VertuoLine vs. Original models because there are differences between them and will suit your needs better.

It’s my pleasure to help you with this decision.

I like them both, which one should I choose? Let me explain how they differ and why that may matter for your morning, joe!

Pros of Nespresso OriginalLine

  • High pressure 19 bar pump.
  • Both expensive and less expensive varieties are available.
  • A large number of varieties
  • You can save money on coffee by using third-party Nespresso capsules for this line.
  • A large range selection of compatible and branded Nespresso capsules
  • You can choose a built-in or a separate frother.
  • Perfect for limited kitchen space
  • They make a velvety crema.

Cons of Nespresso OriginalLine

  • A few brew choices
  • A bit noisy than VertuoLine machines
  • The water tank of most original line machines is small.

Pros of Nespresso VertuoLine

  • They make a thicker crema.
  • You can select a large number of coffee drinks.
  • Descent operations without making a noise
  • Easy barcode system
  • All VertuoLine machines can brew espresso and larger drinks akin to standard pour-over coffee.

Cons Nespresso VertuoLine

  • Vertuo capsules are more expensive than OriginalLine capsules.
  • No more varieties
  • A Vertuo machine brews coffee with centrifugal force rather than high pressure.
  • You cannot get third-party Vertuo capsules except Starbux Vetuo capsules, so you are limited to Starbux and Nespresso’s coffee offerings using a Vertuo machine

 OriginalLine Brewing Technology

Despite their unique design, all Nespresso original line machines work the same way. When you insert a compatible capsule and close the seat, it punctures the capsule several times from above. The coffee machine pumps the right amount of water from the water tank to the capsule according to the size of the beverage you choose.

Each Nespresso capsule contains a filter that ensures no coffee ground in your coffee cup. The machine rotates the waterline around the heating element to reach the perfect temperature. The device continues to pump hot water into the capsule under high pressure until the capsule releases a rich, crema-topped good espresso.

VertuoLine Brewing Technology

The VertuoLine system brings the Vertuo coffee closer to the American style of filtered coffee, with a thick layer of crema. It is a magic of centrifugal force. Since Nestle Nespresso introduced the Vertuo coffee system, Nespresso’s market share has grown significantly compared to its competitors throughout the United States and especially in North America.

The biggest difference between the brewing system of Nespresso Original Line and VertuoLine is that in Original Line machines, you press the button to select the size of the beverage. At the same time, each Vertuo capsule has a bar code that the Vertuo machine reads to automatically brew the right size for that particular coffee or espresso with just a touch of a button.

What are the Similarities Between Nespresso OriginalLine Machines Overall

USA and Canada partners: De’Longhi and Breville

UK Partners: Krups and Magimix

Pressure pump: All OriginalLine machines have 19 bar pump pressure for capsule extraction.

Heat-up Time: All OriginalLine machines have a quick heat-up time.

Auto-Off function: All OriginalLine machines auto-off after 9 minutes, which is adjustable.

What are Nespresso Capsules?

Nespresso offers two types of capsules: OriginalLine and Vertuoline. Original capsules can be used in OriginalLine machines, and Vertuo capsules can be used in Vertuoline machines. Nespresso fills these capsules with high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans, which it collects from countries producing high-quality coffee beans in Central and South America, Africa, and Asia.

Each OriginalLine capsule contains 5–7 grams of ground coffee, while the Vertuo Gran Lungo capsules contain 9.5 grams of ground coffee. You can also save money on Nespresso capsules by buying in bulk, as they stay fresh for months and even up to years.

Related: Where to Buy Nespresso Pods

OriginalLine Cup Sizes

Nespresso offers three different capsule sizes for all OriginalLine machines: Ristretto (25 ml) or (0.85 oz), Espresso (40 ml) or (1.35 oz), and Lungo (110 ml) or (3.7 oz), not all original line machines offer the same cup sizes, there are following variations:

Nespresso CitiZ, Nespresso CitiZ & Milk, Nespresso Pixie, and all such small Nespresso models offer only espresso and lungo cup sizes, while all Nespresso discontinued models offer ristretto with espresso and lungo. And if you want to taste latte, macchiato, and latte macchiato with espresso, then check out the Nespresso Cretista series and the Nespresso Litsima series. And if you just want a big cup of coffee like Gran Lungo, Vertuo machines will serve you better.

VertuoLine Capsule Sizes

A Vertuo coffee is longer than an Original coffee. Nespresso offers five different capsule sizes for all Vertuo machines: Espresso (1.35 oz), Double Espresso (2.7 oz), Gran Lungo (5 oz), Coffee Mug (7.8 oz), and Alto (14 oz) capsules programmable from 0.3-17 oz, while Nespresso Vertuo Nest offers 18 oz pour-over style coffee.

Can I make Double Espresso with My Original Line Machine?

The simple answer is no! Because Double Espresso is a Nespresso cup size which you can only make with Double Espresso capsules, and only VertuoLine machines are compatible with Double Espresso capsules.

How to Make Latte Macchiato With an Original Line Machine?

Simply buy a separate milk frother if your machine doesn’t have an integrated milk frother! You can buy Arocciono3, Arocciono4, or what your machine is compatible with. Connect the frother with your Original machine, froth your milk, and now you can make macchiato, latte, latte macchiato, flat white, cappuccino, and all espresso-based and other milk recipes with your Original machine.

What is the Difference Between Coffee and Espresso?

Espresso and coffee may look different, but they are not. Espresso is a type of coffee, but you can say that all espresso drinks are coffee but not every coffee drink is espresso. Espresso is a method of making coffee in which a small, concentrated shot is made using high water pressure and finely ground beans (the term also refers to a shot). To make espresso, a manual espresso machine or a traditional espresso machine makes espresso with finely ground coffee beans. One of the distinguishing features of espresso, in addition to its concentrated flavor and more syrupy body, is a top layer of foam called crema, a by-product of the high-pressure extraction process.

Espresso Based Drinks

Espresso can be mixed with milk (or extra water) to make other espresso-based drinks, such as latte, macchiato, latte macchiato, cortado, flat white, cappuccino, marocchino, frappuccino, Americano, and many more. And the fun part is that you can easily make all of these recipes by buying a separate milk frother with any of Nespresso’s Original or Vertuo machines.

Brewing Coffee Vs. Brewing Espresso

There are a lot of coffee brewing methods like French Press, Cold Brew, Percolator, and more, but you can brew a simple coffee by adding hot water to finely or coarsely ground coffee beans. On the other hand, for brewing espresso by extracting coffee pods, you need Keurig, Tassimo, Dolce Gusto, Lavazza, or Nespresso devices. And if you want to brew traditional espresso drinks, you can fulfill your requirements by any traditional, manual, or traditional espresso machine.

Can you make drip coffee with Nespresso?

Both are different things: Drip coffee is made by letting boiling water drip slowly through finely-ground coffee, on the other hand, whereas Nespresso coffee is the more general term for a group of coffee preparations by Nespresso pods based on espresso, which is far more different from it. Drip coffee yields a definite taste, whereas Nespresso espresso coffee can produce various tastes depending on how it was prepared.

Nespresso Milk Frothers

A good frother is very important in your kitchen tools if you are looking for specialty coffee. Nespresso offers three types of frothers:

  1. Automatic built-in frothers in the shape of swivel frothing arms
  2. Integrated frothers
  3. Separate frothers

Swivel Frothing Arms (milk frother wand)

An electric-powered milk frother wand is a small electric coffee and milk mixer in Nespresso Original machines. It froths the milk automatically by spinning its attachment on the selection or push of a button. You can get this facility in Nespresso Creatista, Nespresso Creatista Pro, Nespresso Creatista Plus, Nespresso Creatista Uno, and Nespresso Atelier.

Integrated Milk Frothers

Most, if not all, Nespresso Original machines come with integrated frothers that you can use to froth milk for a delicious cup of cappuccino or latte. With an integrated automatic milk frother, you have to fill a milk tank or frothing pitcher and push a button or select from the menu, and the Original Nespresso machine will do all the frothing. All 5 models of the Latissima series come with built-in milk frothers.

Separate Milk Frothers

When using a Nespresso coffee maker, a separate milk frother is the best option because you can use it as a kitchen tool to transform milk into thick and silky foam, microfoam, and the alternate heating disk to make hot milk for cocoa and other milk recipes. And after you prepare your frothed milk, you can easily add it to coffee and espresso to make cappuccinos, lattes, and more.

Either Nespresso OriginalLine machines that don’t have an integrated milk frother and all Nespresso Vertuo machines come with separate frothers.

Most of the users prefer to use two separate tools for brewing coffee and if this is the case, then buying a Nespresso Original or Vertuo machine, and a standalone frother is your go-to option. However, if you prefer the convenience of having a Nespresso machine with a built-in milk frother, there are plenty of options out there.

Nespresso Recycling Program

In recent years, Nespresso has also stepped up its capsule recycling process due to strong criticism from environmentalists, offering free recycling bags that you can order directly from your home or pick up from multiple locations. Once full, you can send it back to the nearest UPS or Nespresso boutique.

Pro Tip: Dry used Nespresso pods in a well-dried bowl and put them in recycling bags to protect them from odors.
