I have been using the K-cafe Keruig coffee maker for a long time as I have been fond of drip coffee or long coffee. When my health started to ruin, I shifted my schedule from long to less coffee and replaced my Keurig coffee maker with the compact Nespresso Essenza Mini. I did not buy a standalone milk frother as I am not fond of milk-based beverages. But after some time, I started missing my slow brew K-cafe Keruig coffee maker, and I started to search for alternatives and wanted to replace my Nespresso coffee maker with it. I also thought about coffee machines like French Press, — AeroPress, — Moka Pot, and Percolators, but their taste and quality are not as good as those delivered by the Keurig coffee maker. One of my friends advised me to use the Breville Barista Express, and another suggested using the Breville Oracle Touch. Both models are heavy and large, and I did not have much counter space.
Well! I searched the machine on my own. I saw two types of Nespresso machines; OriginalLine and VertuoLine. As I want to brew long coffees and want something similar to Keurig K-cafe, I searched for VertuoLine coffee makers. I chose a single-serve Vertuo Nespresso machine; its features impressed me greatly. The taste and quality were beyond anything when I bought this machine and brewed coffee. As I’m not particularly eager to brew latte, cappuccino, etc., the absence of a milk frother did not bother me. An affordable Vertuo machine is a gadget that I need.

Espresso Machine Vs. Coffee Machine
Espresso machines pass hot water through uniform coffee grounds. They use powerful pressure pumps (15-19 bar), standard temperature, and high speed to extract balanced espresso shots within 25-30 seconds. They use dark, light, or medium roasted beans and make 2-ounce shots with a strong taste and color. Espresso machines can be of two types:
- Work with pods to extract great espresso shots; including Nespresso espresso machines and Keurig Espresso machines
- Grind whole coffee beans and pull desired shots; It includes Breville, DeLonghi, and Jura Espresso machines
Coffee machines pass hot water through coffee grounds (either fine or coarse) and filters. They make acidic and bright coffee beverages in 5 oz cups to 60 oz carafes. The brewing process takes 2-30 minutes. Coffee machines can be of two types;

What Is The Difference Between Espresso And Coffee?
Coffee: In coffee preparation, coffee grounds (coarse or fine) are evenly spread in the filter and the machine brews them. The machine passes hot water through filters and grounds.
Espresso: In espresso preparation, the brewer passes hot water through fine coffee grounds and delivers concentrated shot.
The other notable differences between coffee and espresso are as follows;
- Coffee has 80 to 185 mg caffeine content in 8 oz cups while espresso has 40-75 mg caffeine content in 1 oz shot.
- Coffee types include; drip coffee and filter coffee while espresso can be without milk or milk-based (latte, macchiato, cappuccino, etc.) or water-based (Americano, etc).
- The coffee serving amount is 5 oz cups to 60 oz carafe while the espresso serving amount is 1-2 oz.
- Coffee brewing time is 6-12 minutes while espresso takes only 20-30 seconds.
Nespresso Vertuo Coffee And Espresso Maker Overview
Nespresso offers two lines of machines; OriginalLine and VertuoLine.
OriginalLine Machines: These machines extract perfect flavor and premium aroma from coffee capsules via a powerful 19-bar pressure pump.
VertuoLine machines: use the Centrifusion technique, scan the capsule’s barcode, and vigorously run the capsule at 7000 RPM to extract the authentic flavor. It also brews coffee up to 17 oz.
OriginalLine machines are better than VertuoLine machines because;
- They use inexpensive 3rd party capsules, while VertuoLine machines use expensive Vertuo Pods.
- They deliver hotter coffee than VertuoLine machines.
- They Brew authentic espresso cups with dense crema while VertuoLine machines deliver espresso with airy crema.
Besides these, VertuoLine coffee makers are worthy dual brewers; they brew espresso, Double espresso, gran lungo, coffee, or other beverages in different sizes.
Design And Construction — Elegant & Durable
The Nespresso Vertuo machine is available in red, titanium, black, and black matte. I ordered the black matte machine as this color is compatible with my kitchen cabinets. However, its all colors can decorate your kitchen very well. When I unboxed this espresso maker, its sleek and elegant design was quite an eye soothing. With an 8.3 “W x 11.9 “D x 11.0 “H dimension, it easily fits on my kitchen countertop and does not take much counter space. It weighs 10.9 lbs, so I did not have trouble moving it around.
Set up Process — Simple & Easy
I set up the machine according to the instructions mentioned in the user manual. The setup process was relatively easy and took only 10 minutes. According to the manual, I cleaned the water tank, filled it with fresh water, and turned on the middle button. The whole cleaning process is completed within 10 minutes. If you order the machine with Aeroccino3 frother, then clean the frother’s lid, whisk, seal, and interior manually.
Nespresso Vertuo How To Use — Hassle-Free Brewing Process
After cleaning, my coffee machine is ready to brew. I turned on the machine; it started to heat up. It was quite surprising that it took only 15 seconds for pre-heating. After this, I inserted the Vertuo coffee pod (for making coffee), closed the lever, pressed the start button, and the machine did the rest. The delivered coffee is superb and stronger than any other coffee machine. The coffee was not too hot, so who drinks coffee that hot? Pre-warm the coffee cup with hot water. Each capsule has its preferred brew sizes, such as;
- Espresso— 1.35 oz
- Double Espresso — 2.7 oz
- Gran Lungo — 5 oz
- Coffee— 8 oz
- Alto— 14 oz

How To Make Coffee And Espresso With A VertuoLine Coffee Machine?
The Vertuo machine delivers perfect single-serve coffee and espresso.
For single-serve coffee:
- Turn on the machine and allow it to heat for 15 seconds.
- Adjust the drip tray according to your cup size and place the desired coffee cup under the coffee outlet.
- Insert the pod (specific for coffee, i.e. 8 oz) and close the lever.
- The machine will deliver the perfect cup of coffee with hazelnut color into your coffee cup within 90-105 seconds.
- Once the process is completed, the machine will automatically eject the capsule.
- Turn on the machine and allow it to heat for 15 seconds.
- Adjust the drip tray according to your cup size and place the desired coffee cup under the coffee outlet.
- Insert the pod (specific for coffee, i.e. 8 oz) and close the lever.
- The machine will deliver the perfect cup of coffee with hazelnut color into your coffee cup within 90-105 seconds.
- Once the process is completed, the machine will automatically eject the capsule.
For Espresso:
The entire process is the same as followed for coffee preparation except, instead of coffee pods, place the espresso pod (1.35 oz) in your Vertuo machine. Can You Make Double Espresso With a Vertuoline Coffee Machine?
The Vertuo machine can make double espresso with its Double Espresso Scuro Vertuo Pod. Each Vertuo pod offers specific brew size such as;
- Espresso — 1.35 oz
- Double Espresso — 2.7 oz
- Gran lungo — 5 oz

Cleaning— Require Low Maintenance
I did not like cleaning the machine regularly as it was tiresome work. Vertuo smart coffee maker is helpful as the user decides when to clean the machine. It does not require frequent cleaning and has low maintenance requirements. According to the manual,
- I emptied the capsule container once it became full.
- I removed the water tank, cleaned it, filled it with fresh water, and pressed the button three times.
- The cleaning mode is activated, and the cleaning process is completed within 10 minutes.
- However, if you use a separate frother, clean it after every use.
Nespresso Vertuo Descaling — Fast and Easy Process
Vertuo coffee and espresso machine requires descaling every 6 months and will take only 20 minutes. When I descaled my machine, I learned it is a relatively fast and easy process. The button started to blink, and at first, I got worried, but when I consulted the user manual, I realized that it was a descaling alert. So, I descaled my machine according to the manual’s instructions. The descaling process includes;
- Empty the capsule container.
- Fill the water tank with a descaling solution.
- Press and hold the button seven times to activate the descaling mode.

Price
Before buying, I searched for the Vertuo coffee and espresso machine in many online stores. It costs different in different stores. Its price is $159 on Amazon, $209 on Nespresso.com, and $259 on Bed Bath Beyond. I bought this machine from Amazon as it is a reliable and trustworthy store. The Vertuo coffee and espresso machine are great because they offer easy brewing, cleaning, and descaling. It scans the capsule’s barcode and delivers the best in-cup results without setting foot in a coffee shop.
