How To Make Ristretto With Nespresso CitiZ

The Nespresso brand doesn’t list how to make a Ristretto in the Nespresso CitiZ manual, but if you’re a Ristretto enthusiast, don’t worry! We will tell you from our experience how to make Ristretto with your Nespresso CitiZ.

You should note that the Nespresso CitiZ only makes two volumes of drinks, one for Espresso and the other for Lungo. If you want to program the Ristretto on your Citiz machine, you have to select one of the Espresso or Lungo buttons. But keep in mind that the button you choose to program the Ristretto will give you Ristretto instead of Espresso or Lungo. Now it’s up to you whether you sacrifice Espresso or Lungo for Ristorto.

After programming the Ristretto you can get the following cup sizes from your Nespresso CitiZ,

Either:

  • Ristretto
  • Lungo

Or:

  • Ristretto
  • Espresso

That means in both cases you have to skip either the Espresso or the Lungo.

Instructions:

  1. Turn your CitiZ “ON” by pushing Either Espresso or Lungo. Its lights will blink for approximately 25 seconds while the machine is heating up. When the lights remain steady it indicates the machine is ready for brewing.
  2. Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water and insert your favorite Ristretto capsule.
  3. Place a Ristretto sized cup under the coffee outlet
  4. Press and hold either Espresso or Lungo button.
  5. Release the button once your cup is filled with Ristretto size.
  6. The Ristretto size is now stored.
  7. The next time you press this button, your Citiz will serve you your favorite Ristretto.

How To Make A Double Shot of Espresso With Nespresso CitiZ

It depends on what kind of double shot you want to make. In my experience there are two types of double shot you can make with your Nespresso CitiZ. The first method is to brew the same Nespresso capsule twice:

  1. Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water.
  2. Turn your CitiZ “ON” by pushing Either Espresso or Lungo. Its lights will blink for approximately 25 seconds while the machine is heating up. When the lights remain steady it indicates the machine is ready for brewing.
  3. Lift the lever and insert your favorite Nespresso capsule.
  4. Place your desired sized cup for double shot under the coffee outlet
  5. Now, you have to press the Espresso button.
  6. Don’t remove your cup from under the coffee outlet nor eject the used capsule to the used capsule container.
  7. Press the Espresso button again. Your CitiZ will brew the capsule twice.
  8. Now, remove your double shot of Espresso cup from under the coffee outlet.
  9. Lift the lever and close it to eject the used capsule in the used capsule container.

Note: The thing to note is that by brewing a Nespresso capsule twice this way, the coffee you get will be thinner, weaker, and less flavorful.

If you only want to brew the capsules twice with your Citiz machine, I would recommend using the Ristretto or Espresso button. If you use the lungo button for this purpose, the resulting coffee will be thinner, weaker and less flavorful.
